1. Capacity: for how many?
Capacity is given in litres. As a rough guide, small models (around 2–3 litres) are usually enough for one or two people; for a family, look at larger models. Bear in mind that food shouldn't be piled up if you want it crispy.
2. One basket, two baskets or oven-style
- One basket: the simplest and most compact.
- Two baskets: cook two things at once, each at its own temperature; some sync them so they finish together.
- Oven-style: a door and several trays; more versatile and often with a window to see the food. Usually takes up more space.
3. Power and energy use
Power is given in watts. More power usually means it heats up faster, but also a higher peak in consumption. Because they're small and heat quickly, for normal portions they usually use less than switching on a full-size oven.
4. Cleaning
- Check whether the basket and rack are dishwasher-safe.
- A good non-stick coating makes cleaning easier; avoid scourers that scratch it.
- Simple shapes without many nooks are easier to clean.
5. Size in your kitchen
Measure the space on your worktop and leave room around and behind it: hot air comes out. Two-basket and oven-style models are quite wide.
6. Features
Preset programmes are handy, but almost everything comes down to temperature and time. Pay more attention to clear controls and being able to pause to shake the basket.
